Before the camp

As we know, Asia Pacific Networking Group (APNG) is an Internet organization dedicated to the advancement of networking infrastructure in this region, and to the research and development of all associated enabling technologies. Some of the senior members of my lab have been members of camp, such as Xin Liu, Guohan Lu, Yang Chen, Yangbo Zhu and Xiaoxin Shao. And they all encouraged me to go to this camp. When I got to know that I was selected to the 8th APNG camp, I was eager to go to the camp.

I arrived on Singapore, and went to APAN meeting before APNG camp. Then I enjoyed our camp in the following three days.

1st day (18 July 2006)

The 8th APNG Camp was held in Singapore from July 18 - 20, 2006. It was a wonderful learning experience for everybody. There are many friends from different countries in the camp. We got to know one another, and began our camp with Awal’s opening. And Okhwa Lee gave an APNG brief overview. Then WG chairs made their WG opening and the sponsors gave their speeches.

The keynote speakers gave wonderful speeches and the fellows were excited to make their own presentations. In the afternoon, we began WG discussions. I joined the Internet technology WG, and we discussed some issues about Internet. It is an interesting issue that Internet technology faces different problems in different countries.

We had our dinner with APAN meeting for the 10th anniversary of APAN. All the people were very glad for the 10-year history of APAN, and we talked a lot during the dinner.

2nd day (19 July 2006)

The schedule today was similar to the 1st day. Some keynote speakers and the fellows gave their speeches or presentations today. And we went on our WG in the afternoon.

The local camp reports were given today. And we were glad to see many countries’ local camp. They are very useful and helpful to the researchers in those countries.

We enjoyed ourselves in the dinner and the costume party. We got to know different cultures in different countries.

3rd day (20 July 2006)

This is the last day of this camp.

Also some keynote speakers and the fellows gave their speeches or presentations in the morning. And WG summaries and final reports were given by the WG chairs. From the reports, we could see that the fellows talked and discussed a lot during the WGs.

The APNG Annual General meeting was done and new committees and respective chair heads were also presented.

And the following was Sentosa sightseeing tour and delicious dinner. It is a wonderful ending of our camp.

Summary

After the APNG camp, I went to APAN meeting for the last reports of APAN WG and general meeting. I think it is also a good chance to communicate with the researches from other countries. And it is a nice day too.

The 8th APNG camp is beneficial to me via many aspects. Some are presented as follows.

  1. get to know many friends from many countries
  2. learn from these people in the camp
  3. get some new ideas or perspectives in Internet
  4. discuss about some important issues in Internet
  5. different culture

This is my first time to come to the APNG camp. And this is my first time to visit to Singapore. I am very happy and lucky to go to the camp. It is a wonderful experience for me. Now I am looking forward to the 9th APNG camp which will be held in Xi’An in China.

In conclusion, I think that the APNG camp is very helpful for me. And thanks a lot for all the people in the 8th camp.

Suggestions

  1. It will be better if there are more fellows in the next camp. It is a good chance to go to the camp. As I know, more people want to come to this camp.
  2. It will be much better if we have some records or CD of the camp, such things will record the whole camp for a long time.
  3. Much more activities of APNG camp after the camp. We can do more after the camp. Perhaps it is also very useful for us and those who cannot come to camp.
  4. I think that we can do more in WG. As we see, we just discussed for a short time in the camp. Perhaps we can add more time for WG discussion in the next camp. Also we can continue our discussion after the camp.
  5. In order to communicate better, I think that it is necessary to let the fellows communicate with one another through email before the camp. At least, they can get to know one another before the camp.
  6. If necessary, the camp can be held for longer time. It depends on the discussion in the camp.
  7. Presentation of the latest technologies. This can be combined with APAN meeting because a lot of people will go to APAN. And we camp could communicate with the APAN.
