And the meeting started with the agenda "Fellowship Selection" and behind the schedule a bit for waiting late comers.
Minutes
1. Participants:
Sumith, Xiaohui, Kashif, Ravi, Amaraweera, and Kung (APNG Secretariat)
2. Evaluation results:
- Some disagreements were raised against to two students who got low marks but selected by Prof. Kanchana. However, APNG has to meet it's other objectives in expanding APNG in the region. Taking more participants from wide economies. So we have to do a balance. That's why we need to enforce other criteria in the final selection. To re-check with Prof. Kanchana about these two students before making final selection >> Kung.
- Most of the members from Universities with Partial Fellowship will not be able to join the camp. But subject to fund availability, such cases will be considered case by case later.
- USD 17,000 is secured from 3 Sponsorships, yet USD 13,000 is short to meet the target and we need to work really hard on this. CERNET will likely offer a dinner to APNG Camp but not confirmed yet while CSTNET declined for Sponsorship request. To get support from Tommy-son to reach Prof. Xing Li and potential sponsors through him >> Xiaohui If some of the local Chinese fellows could get sponsorships from their respective Universities, it would be lesser the burden.
- Tommy agrees with Chinese fellowship selection but to include participants from other countries too in the region. From APNG point of view we need strategies to populate APNG in other countries too. We should have an outreach program??? NOT all committee members are active now. Specially, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand etc. in which countries many active members are there but less/no activities to promote APNG compared to LK which has active local camp activities.
- Sumith suggested to contact current committee members, past active local folks & getting them back in active.
3. Theme for 9th APNG Camp:
- "Towards Innovative & Energytic Younger Generation for a Networked Asia-Pacific" or "Networked World invites Innovative & Energytic Youth" by Mr. Amaraweera.
- "Build the Innovative Next Generation in Asia-Pacific" by Sumith
- "Informed youths in a network Asia-Pacific" by Ravi -- to convey that it is through a chain of people that we can finally achieve network excellence.
- More themes will be decided later and choose the one which suits best for APNG Camp.
