Working Group on Internet Culture and Blog

Introduction

“Working Group on Internet Culture and Blogs” tends to explore issues in order to capture the social implications of Internet on the users in Asia Pacific region. This WG facilitates a cross-cultural view exchange platform by reinforcing inter-comprehension among the participants through healthy WG discussions. However, prime focus of the WG is to study the affects of Internet on social development and culture, “blogging”, digital divide, local language e-content, role of internet policy, implications of digital technology on the ethics, culture, language, and the society at large.

WG on Internet culture also asserts that “Blogging” describes a positive way to share thoughts and exchange different point of views on Internet. This WG therefore highlight the positive undertone of blogs and make its influence better understood through sharing personal experiences during the camp.

WG on Internet Culture believes that while Internet virtually connects communities across the region it still poses significant challenges to the same population in a variety of social dimensions.

APNG Camp would like to invite those candidates who are interested to present their professional or academic research experiences regarding Internet and culture fusion in Asia Pacific attempting to bring together a complete spectrum of social issues encountered regionally.

Topics

In the past few years, WG on Internet Culture and Blogs has discussed about development of virtual community, creation of Blogs in countries, change of youth language and collective cooperation online/offline and need for local language technology.

In the 9th camp, WG on Internet Culture would emphasis more on local case studies highlighting Internet as a medium of development while also studying its region wide effects on culture to gauge its inherent strengths and weaknesses.

Working Group (WG) on e-Learning and Live E!

Introduction to e-Learning

The working group (WG) on e-Learning and Live E! aims to bring together people who have concerns for the use of Internet in education and who have interests to consist sensor network to share environment data. It is the target of this WG to introduce various approaches of e-learning where contents are shared through the Internet.

Topics for e-Learning and Live E!

The WG would like to encourage participation in the following broad themes:
  1. e-Learning practices
    • Online teaching and learning
    • e-Learning in classrooms
    • e-Learning for empowering workers (especially for the rural folks and Farmers)
    • e-Learning for undergraduate and postgraduate students
  2. Education of informatics and communication technologies
    • Learning ICT in schools
    • Technology training in higher education
  3. Technologies for education and training
    • Tools for learning-innovations and practices (video conferencing, websites, online archives etc)
    • Instructional design and e-learning contents
    • Quality standards in e-content
  4. Current status and future trends of e-Learning
    • The current status and practice of e-Learning in applicant’s country
    • Emerging technologies & practices
  5. Current status and future trends of Sensor networks
    • Education using data on sensor network
    • Other application with the open sensor network
  6. Live E! project and its expansion in AP region
    • Technology to share data from global sensor network
    • Application and effect by using global or local sensor network

Introduction to live E! Project

Furthermore, this WG also aims to disseminate information about the Live E! Project in Japan (http://www.live-e.org), which uses mesh-networks of distributed sensors for digital monitoring of meteorological phenomenon. The WG also intends to have discussions on the commercial, educational and policy aspects of this project.

Working Group on Natural Disaster recovery Management and e- Health

Introduction

This work group was introduced to APNG at the 6th camp in Kyoto Japan, as a result of the awareness caused by the massive Tsunami that affected mainly the South Asian Region countries including Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and India With Tsunami, Governments and individuals all realized the lack of IT solutions to prevent, mitigate and manage disasters. Since the issues addressed by this working group are global to any disaster and not specific to Tsunami, disaster management working group will address any issue relevant to ICT and disasters. With large scale disasters occurring so frequently in the recent past, 7th camp and 8th also hosted disaster management as a separate working group.

The 8th camp witnessed presentations on disaster management applications that were deployed in various disasters including the recent 2005 Kashmir/Pakistan earthquake, Guinsaugon landslides disaster in Philippines 2006, and the Jogjakarta Earthquake in Indonesia 2006.

Goal of the DM working group for the 9th Camp:

  1. Bring an awareness of the need for DM and available standards, technologies to the participants.
  2. Brain storm on types of disasters, categorize them and how would IT requirement differ.
  3. Special focus on pandemics with emphasis on the avian flue.
In the event of a pandemic like avian flue face to face consulting is prohibited. Therefore the only option is to use ICT.
  4. Promote DM solutions in respective countries of the participants.
  5. Form a group skilled in DM solutions who can volunteer to deploy and train in the event of a disaster.
  6. Brainstorm on practical ways of how ICT can help in a disaster.
E.g. a solution that totally relies on the Internet will most probably fail in a disaster as the infrastructure would be damaged by the disaster.
  7. Identify other project areas that could collaborate with DM.
    E.g. The e-live project
  8. Disaster Management and Research.
This a practical way of contributing to the community. If we can develop a test bed for DM experts to perform simulations, test out their optimization algorithms, it will fill a great gap.
  9. Disaster preparedness and pre- disaster situation monitoring.

Topics for Disaster Management Working Group:

  • Disaster Management Standards
  • Disaster Management and Ontology
  • Disaster Management Hardware/Software
  • Disaster Management deployment case studies
  • Disaster Management and Data collection E.g. use of hand held devices, OCR
  • Disaster Management and distributed , disconnected mode
  • Disaster Management and Alerting standards and technologies E.g : Common Alerting Protocol (CAP)
  • Disaster Management and GIS
  • Disaster Management and sensor networks
  • Disaster Management and Biometrics
  • Disaster Management and LION (Localization. And ...)
  • Disaster Management and Research
  • Disaster Management Systems and privacy issues.

Participants are required to submit a paper and presentation if they want to be included in the disaster management working group. They are recommended to compile their material under the above topics, but are not limited to those.

They can submit under another theme and the working group committee will decide the relevance to disaster management.

Working Group on e-Commerce and Business Start-up

Introduction

E-commerce applications were primarily focused on handling monetary transactions and managing business catalogs a few years ago. In the next Camp Special attention will be given to the Systems, Man, and Cybernetics aspects of e-commerce. For instance, mobile computing, distributed intelligence, real-time optimization and infrastructure developments are important system enablers for innovative e-commerce enterprises.
